A Scuba diver walking on the rocks with his gear in hand towards his Triton ute

1 October 2019

In 2018, the Mitsubishi Triton was NZ's third-favourite ute, selling at an average monthly rate of 395 vehicles. Then at the beginning of this year, a heavily-facelifted model arrived and sales shot up so much that it quickly moved into second place on the ute sales ladder.

However, there's more to the updated 2019 Triton than just a new look. Mitsubishi has added safety features, improved the comfort and convenience levels and made more changes than meets the eye. But how does it compare to the Ford Ranger? As two of the bestselling dual cab utes in the country, people often wonder which option offers more benefits. Below is an in-depth ute comparison.

The new Triton now has a much more aggressive look, with squared-off body design, slimmer headlights and the attractive dynamic shield grille at the front. The interior features new padded areas, a leather steering wheel, leather gear knob and a luxurious looking handbrake handle.

Not much has changed design wise with the Ford Ranger apart from chrome door handles and grille surrounds for XLT variants and a new front bumper skin on the Wildtrak. With simple interior design, the Ranger works well. It’s nothing special, but it gets a lot of the ergonomics right.

Standard on the GLXR model of the Triton is a trip computer, cruise control, power steering, air conditioner, LED headlights and daytime running lights, a 6.1-inch touch screen media system with Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, AM/FM radio and USB connectivity. Improved suspension makes for a more comfortable ride.

All Ford Rangers have power windows, power mirrors, central locking, cruise control, air conditioning, multimedia touch screen with Bluetooth. There is also keyless entry with push-button start.

Both the Mitsubishi Triton and the Ford Ranger have a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating. The Ranger has technical safety aids like auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, reverse camera, rollover mitigation, hill control assists and trailer sway control as standard safety features. Lane assist comes as part of the XLT Tech Pack.

The Mitsubishi Triton however, is the indisputable benchmark when it comes to safety in ute comparisons. It outdoes all of its competitors for active safety equipment, fitted with reversing sensors and cameras, seven airbags, auto emergency braking (AEB) that works at high and low speeds and forward collision mitigation on GLXR, GLX and VRX models.

Lane departure warning is standard on GLXR models while VRX models include a blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and an ultrasonic misacceleration system that will dull throttle response if it thinks you'll hit something at low speed. There's also lane change assist, front parking sensors and auto high-beam headlights. The VRX comes with the very handy Multi Around monitor, a 360-degree camera setup that offers a surround view display on the screen.
