Next Generation Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross PHEV Comparison

24 December 2021

As 2021 draws to a close, we find ourselves looking to the future with one thing for certain - electric vehicles are going to play a larger role in our daily lives. Over the past few years, we have seen electric vehicle technology evolve at a rapid rate and as New Zealand pushes towards neutralising our carbon emissions, many people are jumping on board and adopting electric vehicles. There’s little reason not to as the current state of electric vehicle technology means you are no longer making a compromise when comparing EV and PHEV technology to their traditional combustion engine counterparts. Mitsubishi has been leading the charge in innovation in the field of electric vehicles and their latest offerings have gone above and beyond to set the bar even higher.

This begs the question to be asked - which Mitsubishi PHEV is the right vehicle for you? The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV, or the soon to be released Next Generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV? Both vehicles are proven in their class but depending on your personal requirements, one may suit you more than the other. Let's take a closer look at comparing the Eclipse Cross PHEV to the Next Generation Outlander PHEV.

Vehicle Specifications

While both vehicles are classed as SUVs, they cater to slightly different market segments within the class. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV is a crossover SUV, providing punchy push-you-into-your-seat off the line acceleration and tight steering. It leans into the strengths of its smaller wheelbase than the Outlander PHEV, with its 4WD providing incredible handling, no matter the weather conditions. With 18” alloy wheels, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross boasts a max power of 94kW @ 4500 RPM and 199 Nm @ 4,500 RPM. There’s no doubt that this 5 seater SUV will scratch the itch of any performance fanatic.

The Next Generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV stands its ground in the compact SUV class, providing a more aggressive option for customers looking for something bigger. The reimagined design pays homage to past Outlander models while taking a bold step toward the future. Equal parts daily runner and ready for adventure, the Next Generation Outlander PHEV’s roomy interior seats up to 7 people and its 20” alloy wheels and powerful engine allows it to handle almost anything you can throw in its path.

Engine Specifications

Under the hood, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV has a 2.4L Twin Motor 4WD with optional petrol engine engagement (known as Parallel Hybrid mode). The punchy acceleration and performance are thanks to Mitsubishi’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC), seamlessly transitioning between electric, and hybrid driving to provide an unparalleled driving experience. The Next Generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features similar technology and, utilising Mitsubishi’s Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) to take on tough terrain, effortlessly tow a trailer or boat, while still providing incredible performance and driving range even with its bigger size.

Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency is one of the major draws for people wanting to invest in a PHEV. While a full electric vehicle (EV) runs exclusively on electricity, it does so while sacrificing range and performance… not to mention introducing “range anxiety”, the fear of running out of battery power before reaching your destination. A PHEV is able to use EV technology alongside a traditional combustion engine, and by combining these technologies they are able to be incredibly fuel-efficient. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV has a 1.9L per 100km fuel economy, making it incredibly economic to run even for long road trips. Couple this with its full EV mode in which you rely completely on the electric motors and fuel worries are a thing of the past! While we are still waiting on the final fuel economy of the Next Generation Outlander PHEV, the fact that they share similar technologies means we can expect the most fuel-efficient Outlander to date. In addition to this, the Next Generation Outlander PHEV has the biggest Lithium Ion in the Mitsubishi fleet, allowing fuel-free freedom for even the most well-travelled SUV owner.

EV Capabilities

Mitsubishi’s EV technology has been at the forefront of the industry since the start. The latest iterations of PHEV vehicles are incredibly impressive and take full advantage of all the innovations Mitsubishi has brought to the EV space. Both the Eclipse Cross and the Next Generation Outlander PHEV are powered by a lithium-ion battery that delivers power to electric motors that directly drive each axle. These batteries can be charged directly from your home’s power socket, as well as being charged using the vehicle's combustion engine and while braking. In addition to this, they can be fast-charged using a Type 2 AC port or Fast Charge Station, with the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross being able to be fast-charged in 25 minutes.

The Next Generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV puts its extra size to good use, boasting a 20kwH lithium-ion battery in comparison to the Eclipse Cross PHEV’s 13.8kwH battery. This means that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV provides 84km of fuel-free, electric-powered EV range - meaning that 90% of Kiwis drivers’ day-to-day commute would require no petrol. When the combustion engine is added back into the mix, the Outlander PHEV offers an 800km combined range, making it the perfect SUV for those longer road trip adventures.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV’s EV range will be more than enough as a daily runner for most, providing an EV range of up to 55km and a combined range of 660km. Not only are these impressive range metrics, the Eclipse Cross PHEV also has a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to a regular Eclipse Cross.

Safety Features

Mitsubishi has set the gold standard in the industry for the safety features included in their SUVs. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV and the Next Generation Outlander PHEV both come standard with a range of safety features including Forward Collision Mitigation, Blindspot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist ensuring that you and your passengers are kept safe no matter where the road takes you.
