A PHEV THAT REFUSES TO COMPROMISE PERFORMANCE

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV system uses two electric motors for a combined motor output of 130KW, an astonishing amount of power for such a compact SUV. These motors are powered by a high-capacity 13.8kWh lithium-ion battery supported by a 94kW/199Nm 2.4L engine.

With one motor located at each axle, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV system is unique. Unlike its contemporaries, the PHEV system is EV rather than engine based. This means that the motors are able to deliver drive force to each axle for a smooth and quiet driving experience with no shift lock when the engine kicks in.

SEAMLESS TRANSITION BETWEEN THREE DRIVE MODES

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV features three drive modes to ensure you’re getting the best performance at all times. EV DRIVE mode solely uses the electric motors powered by the electricity stored in the drive battery, and therefore consumes no petrol, to power the car.

In Series Hybrid Mode, the engine is only used to generate electric power for the battery, and is perfect for when the drive battery is low or when powerful thrust is required. This may be to rapidly accelerate or to climb a steep hill. Parallel Hybrid Mode uses the petrol engine and electric motors simultaneously for optimal fuel efficiency. The PHEV system intelligently selects the most efficient drive mode based on the situation, creating a dynamic and secure driving experience.

FAQ

A PHEV, or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle is a vehicle that has both a traditional combustion engine and electric motors. The electricity to drive the electric motors is stored in a battery that is able to be charged from an external source. It also is capable of using the combustion engine, braking and decelerating to charge the battery.

A PHEV is the best of both worlds, capitalising on the strength of both an EV and a classic hybrid. An EV has no combustion engine, and relies solely on the electricity stored in its battery. This means their practicality is limited by the range they are able to travel before needing to be plugged in to charge. A classic hybrid may have an all electric mode, but this is usually reserved for short distances at slow speeds (i.e. parking lots). They have a combustion engine, but lack the ability to be plugged in to charge, so rely on the engine solely to recharge their relatively small batteries.

To fully charge a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV at home takes about 7 hours and costs around $1.40. Fast Charging stations are about 25c per minute plus 25c/KWh, and would be required for 25 minutes, meaning it would cost approximately $10.
