Mitsubishi went above and beyond with the release of the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton line-up - it took everything that made the previous iterations of the iconic UTE spectacular and elevated them to the next level. The redesign saw the Triton receiving a fresh, muscular front-end, a 5-star safety rating, as well as oodles of mod cons and creature comforts like a 7" Touchscreen, SmartPhone connectivity (via CarPlay and Android Auto) and full Bluetooth functionality.
The additional standard safety features and convenience felt like a premium offering, all while maintaining Triton's highly competitive price point. This year we saw an addition to this line-up - The 2023 Triton GSR 4WD Auto, which added even more convenient features including a Multi Around View Monitor and Keyless Operating System - Mitsubishi just keeps going from strength to strength with the value they can pack into their Triton line-up. It's no wonder it's earned its spot as New Zealand's 3rd best-selling ute.

But perhaps the most impressive element of the new ute is the dominant engine which, combined with new and improved structural elements, makes this a hugely versatile and powerful automobile. More than ever before, the Mitsubishi Triton towing power will blow you away. It's a huge step up from previous models. Here are just a few facts about the Triton's glorious tow capacity and some ideas about how you might put it to good use.
4WD Double Cab models of the Triton can tow up to 3.5T. No wonder it's got so much grunt; the 2.4L Turbo Diesel engine supplies the vehicle with a whopping 135kW of Power, and 437Nm of Torque. The transmission comes in 6-Speed Auto perfect for those towing the heaviest of loads, so you'll be able to haul any loads and still feel comfortable.
The magic behind the 4WD variants of the Triton's impressive towing capacity is thanks in no small part to the Japanese carmaker's revolutionary Super Select II 4WD system. This unique all-wheel drive technology gives drivers the choice of using 4WD only when needed, or even as a full-time 4WD, regardless of whether you're off-roading or on the tarmac without risking damage to the vehicle. Its permanent and semi-permanent smart four-wheel drive functionality makes driving and towing safe and reliable under otherwise hazardous situations, adding extra stability and traction while making it easier to handle sharper acceleration and braking while manoeuvring heavier loads. On top of that, the Super Select II also increases fuel efficiency meaning that taking advantage of the ute's extraordinary power is not at the expense of your wallet!
While the 2WD variants of the Triton do not have Mitsubishi's Super Select II 4WD system, they still hold their own when it comes to their towing capacity.
The Mitsubishi Triton 2WD variants are equipped with a range of innovative technologies designed to assist users while they’re out on the road. One of these features is Sports Mode, which makes towing easier and more manageable. By pressing a button, Sports Mode helps optimise the engine’s control characteristics to match driving conditions when a trailer or caravan is connected. The result means users get improved responsiveness and stability as they drive and enjoy cleaner, smoother gear shifts that make accelerating up hills and controlling speed a breeze. With this feature activated, towing becomes much easier for new and experienced drivers alike. Ultimately, Mitsubishi Triton 2WD variants’ Sports Mode enable users to drive confidently with their trailer in tow no matter the terrain or weather conditions.
The Mitsubishi Triton is built tough, and the 2.4L turbo diesel engine can handle a great deal without breaking a sweat. You might be surprised to learn that even when fully loaded with its maximum 3.5T tow capacity, the Triton retains its composure and poise.
When Driven put the Mitsubishi Triton's towing capacity claims to the test, they were more than impressed. The team at Driven towed a dual-axle trailer of lumber amounting to 2 tonnes as well as a further 700 kg loaded onto the Triton's back tray, travelling from Matakana to Auckland.
Their first observation was the lack of sag in the suspension even once the Triton was loaded to its max, before further being impressed by how capable the engine was.
"The lack of rear sag translated to a no-frills, no-surprises driving experience with minimal change in the way it carried itself around corners. More impressive still was that 2.4-litre engine. For the most part, it felt more than powerful enough to shift away at the lights without feeling strained. No embarrassing glances or sympathetic waves at drivers stuck in behind, just smooth sailing."
Between the 2.4L turbo diesel, sports mode and Super Select II 4WD system, the Mitsubishi Triton can match the best towing capacities in its class - putting it neck and neck with the best of its field at a fraction of the price.
The 3.5T towing power of the most recent model will be a boon for tradies and agricultural workers, but that's not all; there's more than enough oomph in this car for both work and play. If you're looking for an automobile to drive around New Zealand, on a weekend or extended trip, and are looking to tow a boat or haul a great big caravan around with you, this is the ute you'll want. For the Mitsubishi Triton, towing caravan-type attachments present no worries at all—almost totally irrespective of incline or terrain.
The Triton has some truly tremendous features to help you get the most out of its towing power. There's a top-quality reversing camera that makes it easier than ever to hook up a trailer to your ute. When you're driving, you'll also benefit from computerised Trailer Stability Assist. It detects potentially dangerous trailer sway, and then automatically applies the breaks on one side of your car to correct it. Towing has never been so easy, or so safe.
