Is it Worth Buying a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV?

Yes, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is worth buying for a range of different reasons. As a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the SUV relies predominantly on its high-capacity lithium-ion battery and electric motors to power the vehicle allowing you to travel for up to 84km without the need for petrol.

For further distances and when you require more power, the Outlander PHEV can use its 2.4L combustion engine to assist the electric motors, greatly extending the Outlander's driving range to over 800km. This results in an SUV that is powerful, spacious, extremely fuel efficient (1.6 L /100 km), low emission and at a competitive price in the market.

Envision a future in which your household budget isn't at the mercy of the ever-increasing cost of fuel. The freedom and convenience of never having to carve out time to refuel at a station.

The Outlander PHEV delivers on this promise. Not only does the SUV take advantage of Mitsubishi's advanced smart PHEV technology, but it also unlocks its full potential with its high-capacity lithium-ion battery.

What is the range of a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV?

At 20 kWH, one of the biggest batteries in its class, the Outlander can travel up to 84km on battery power alone - far exceeding the average Kiwi's daily commute.

And when the time comes to go on an adventure, the Outlander has you covered. Switching out of EV Drive mode into parallel hybrid or series hybrid mode uses the 2.4L engine to support the electric motors, producing a combined range of over 800km - all while providing a fuel economy of 1.6L/ 100km. Wherever you need to go, the Outlander has the range to get you there.

An answer for every situation, The Outlander PHEV features 3 drive modes that can seamlessly be switched between for optimal performance and efficiency.

  1. EV Mode: Access the full potential of your 20kWh Lithium-ion battery. In this mode, you can drive up to 84km on electric power alone.
  2. Parallel Hybrid Mode: For when you require more performance and a longer range, the Outlander PHEVs 2.4L petrol engine is used in conjunction with the electric motors for an efficient and powerful driving experience.
  3. Series Hybrid Mode: The Outlander PHEV operates as a purely electric vehicle when in this mode, using the petrol engine solely to charge the battery and provide additional power to the electric motors when needed. This optimises fuel efficiency for those longer drives.

The Mitsubishi Outlander has already cemented its status as New Zealand's favourite SUV. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has taken what makes the traditional Outlander so special and combined it with one of the most sophisticated PHEV and AWD systems on the market. Powered by a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine and two updated high-efficiency electric motors, the 2.4L DOHC MIVEC Petrol engine has a max power of 98 kW @ 5,500 RPM and max torque of 195 Nm @ 4,300 RPM, while the two permanent magnet synchronous electric motors provide a combined max power of 85kW / 100kW and max torque of 255Nm / 195Nm.

The Outlander PHEV also utilises Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) for incredible handling and stability on the road. The S-AWC system combines advanced torque vectoring technology with vehicle stability control, providing you with the confidence and control you need to take on any road

The Mitsubishi Outlander wins 2022 AA Driven Car of the Year: Best Clean Car PHEV.

When you release a vehicle that revolutionises its class, the world is sure to notice. The Outlander PHEV has been recognised for its advanced electric vehicle technology, superior performance and fuel-efficient capabilities, being awarded the AA Driven Car of the Year: Best Clean Car PHEV in 2022, recognising it as one of the best vehicles on the road today.

"The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been one of the most important plug-in vehicles in New Zealand for a decade; it’s arguably the model that was first to bring electric vehicle technology into the Kiwi mainstream, proving that zero-emissions urban driving didn’t have to come at the expense of SUV practicality and even off-tarmac ability, thanks to a clever dual-motor AWD system.

Ten years on and the Outlander is no longer alone in the market. But the new model has raised the bar significantly in terms of size, quality, technology and - especially in the context of this award."

Drive Life's Outlander PHEV review concluded perfectly, noting "The new Outlander PHEV continues to be an excellent family car, with the ability to be emissions-free for your local journeys, but with a more efficient petrol/electric system for longer trips. It’s the best of both worlds..." (Information released by AA New Zealand and NZME DRIVEN)

Electric vehicle technology has improved exponentially over the last decade. In the past, choosing a fully electric or hybrid vehicle over their traditional combustion counterparts meant compromising on some factors - whether that be cost, range, performance or design. Every year that has ticked by there have been fewer and fewer compromises. With the release of Mitsubishi's Outlander hybrid, it's safe to say that the gap between combustion and electric technology vehicles hasn't only closed, but Mitsubishi's flagship PHEV has taken the lead.

  • Low Running Costs: With an extensive electric range of up to 84km and a combined range of over 800km, worrying about the cost of petrol is a thing of the past.
  • Convenient Charging Options: Able to be charged from a standard NZ house outlet or a fast charge station, power up your Outlander PHEV when it suits you.
  • Value for money: Even given the Next Generation Outlander PHEV's competitive price point, it is packed with advanced features often reserved only for the more expensive, premium competitors in its class.
  • Environmental impact: Driving electric doesn't just save you money but helps save the environment too. With zero emissions in EV mode and 35g/km during hybrid mode, it means even at full power you'll still be significantly reducing your carbon footprint.
  • Safety: The Outlander PHEV has a 5-star ANCAP safety rating and is packed with advanced safety features to ensure you are always safe on the road. It includes Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The standard Mitsubishi Outlander is powered by a traditional combustion engine, while the PHEV models combine this with electric motors. This combination of combustion engines and electric motors creates a vehicle that is highly fuel-efficient with low carbon emissions. The electricity to drive the motors is stored in a lit hium-ion battery that is able to be charged from an external source. PHEVs also use the combustion engine, braking and decelerating to charge the battery.

There are two means of charging your PHEV’s battery. The first is through your standard electrical outlet at your house. While this is a slower charge, many people choose to charge their PHEV overnight while they are not using it. This is more than enough for the next day. The second option is a fast charge station, which provides a quick means of charging your battery while on the go. A fast-charge station provides an 80% charge in 20 minutes.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV features a 20kWh Lithium-ion battery. Lithium batteries will typically last 8-10 years depending on their usage and the rate of charge they are subjected to. As part of Mitsubishi's renowned Diamond Advantage Warranty, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV comes with an 8-year / 160,000km warranty specific to the Lithium-ion battery, providing peace of mind that Mitsubishi's award-winning service has you covered.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV's EV (electric vehicle) mode allows the SUV to be purely powered by its battery, providing an impressive fuel-free range of up to 84km - significantly more than the average Kiwi's daily commute.

Yes! The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is able to charge while driving. This is one of the greatest benefits of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle - you are able to reclaim electricity through braking and decelerating, as well as being able to draw from a traditional combustion engine. Say goodbye to "range anxiety" forever.
